There’s a number of things I’m working on at the moment, mostly Java games. I’ll be adding and updating them below as I progress with them.

Darwin

Overview: This was my Software Engineering Project in my second year at UCD. The project brief was to write a game, in any programming language, based on the concepts explored by the popular flash game flOw - namely evolution and adaptive gameplay. Originally we had planned to write a version for the Nintendo DS using homebrew tools, but as semester progressed and we were getting nowhere fast, we decided to concentrate completely on the Java version.

Progress: The majority of the engine is finished, it just needs a little refinement in the areas of collision detection and how the player grows. I had originally planned to have three different statistics - strength, heath and speed - which the player could increase separately by eating different types of food; this wasn’t included at all in the submitted version, but hopefully I can implement it now.

Small Games

Overview: Towards the start of second year I realised that while I was getting reasonably good at writing systems to model basic physics for games, I had no experience creating menu systems, save games, level progression etc. To solve this problem I decided I would write a few simple games that were well within my ability, so I would have the opportunity to see them through to the finish. This was all well and good, until I got a job…
Progress: I started on both a Tetris clone called Blocks and one called Pipes which is similar to a game called Pipe Mania. Neither of them are finished; however they shouldn’t take too long to complete. After that - Frogger and Breakout could complete the set :)

Zombie

Overview: Based on an old flash game I started working on before college (and bearing quite a similarity to the addictive flash game Boxhead), Zombie is a top down frantic shooter game.

Progress: Despite making some progress on a level editor, Zombie is almost entirely in my head right now.

Music

Overview: For my birthday last April I got an M-Audio Firewire audio interface and a pair of AKG Microphones, intent on turning my room into a sort of ramshackle recording studio. Other than a few bits and pieces, usually about 15 seconds long, not much has come of it.

Progress: Little. There’ll probably be a separate section to this website once I get going with this.
